Queensland Disability Conference 2011

Register now for one of the most important events on Queensland's disability calendar — the Queensland Disability Conference 2011 — to be held at the Cairns Convention Centre from 22 to 23 September.

Are you up to the Challenge?

A New Heart Foundation initiative to improve women’s heart health

For this year’s Go Red for Women campaign, the Heart Foundation is launching a Healthy Heart Challenge as a practical way for women to improve their heart health. The free 10-week Healthy Heart Challenge starts on 1 June and provides small, yet realistic, steps to assist women build changes into their lifestyle to make an important difference to heart health long-term.

On registering, participants will be asked to sign up to complete one of six goals and they will be supported to achieve this through a weekly eNewsletter with tips and information to keep them motivated. The goals are:

·         Be active everyday

·         Improve everyday nutrition

·         Increase knowledge of heart health

·         Quit smoking

·         Lower high blood pressure

·         Lower high cholesterol levels.

The target is 20,000 women, and your support is appreciated. Various ways you can help include:

·         Register for the Healthy Heart Challenge

·         encourage your colleagues and members to sign up to the Challenge

·         promote awareness of  the Healthy Heart Challenge through your professional communication channels

AHPA 20th National Conference : Strengthening Action

The focus of the conference will be on the determinants of health, with a strong emphasis on the social determinants of health along with solutions to strengthen action to address them. The report of the Commission on Social Determinants of Health demonstrated how social factors directly shape health outcomes and explain health inequities. The report stressed the need to tackle the leading causes of ill-health at their roots, going beyond encouraging individuals to change their behaviour. There will also be a focus on Actions to Close the gap on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Determinants of Health.

DES awareness

June 1-7 is DES (diethylstilboestrol) Awareness Week to raise awareness of the anti-miscarriage drug, DES, given to women during pregnancy from 1938 to 1971 (and sometimes beyond). Women given DES and their children of that pregnancy are at higher risk of certain types of cancer and reproductive problems. Wilson HTM Brisbane to the Gold Coast Cycle Challenge

 

A ride in aid of Diabetes Australia - Queensland, and the Heart Foundation. The ride was recently launched by the Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh, who is encouraging Queensland women to join her in promoting active lifestyles, good health and well-being, by being part of the event. The Premier will ride the full 100km in this year's event.
