15 September Treatment of Family Violence in the Family Law "System" in Australia Seminar - Melbourne. The Australian Institute of Family Studies has pleasure in inviting you and your colleagues to attend a seminar on: The Treatment of Family Violence in the Family Law “System” in Australia: The Implications of Restorative Justice Explored by Dr Juliet Behrens - Faculty of Law, Australian National University.

ABSTRACT:
Victims of controlling domestic violence who also face family law issues continue to have their safety compromised and to suffer the abusive use of the legal system by perpetrators.  A range of conditions contribute to this systemic problem, including the fragmentation of the legal “system” faced by victims, and the emphasis given to contact with fathers and to private dispute resolution.  At a more abstract level, unwillingness to look at past conduct and to attribute fault in family law proceedings has led to a failure to pay attention to issues of justice in family law.  This presentation explores the possibilities which the use of restorative justice offers to victims of domestic violence with family law issues.  It will be argued that, while there are considerable dangers, particularly with a generic model of restorative justice, there is also some potential in processes which are carefully designed for the domestic violence context.  In particular, such processes offer the potential to extend an empowering “justice” rather than a “dispute resolution” frame to a wider range of cases and to overcome the current fragmentation of the legal system.  Our concern should be with how to meet the needs of victims of domestic violence, rather than with the good of restorative justice in theory.  We must continue to work on improvements to the formal legal system as alternatives to restorative justice.

Dr Juliet Behrens is a reader in the Faculty of Law, Australian National University, where she specialises in family law.  She has a particular interest in gender issues in family law, including relocation disputes and the treatment of violence against women.  She is co-author (with Professor Patrick Parkinson) of Australian Family Law in Context: Commentary and Materials, which has recently been published in its 3rd edition.  She was formerly chair of the ACT’s Domestic Violence Prevention Council, and is on the editorial board of the Australian Journal of Family Law.

Venue: AIFS Meeting Room, Australian Institute of Family Studies, 300 Queen St, Melbourne 3000

Health Rights, Women's Lives: Challenges & Strategies for Movement Building. 10th International Women & Health Meeting - New Delhi, India. The International Women and Health Meeting (IWHM) has its roots in the global women's movement and includes a wide range of organizations, networks, and grassroots women's groups. The 10th IWHM will mark nearly two and a half decades of the global feminist solidarity on issues that impinge on the health and well being of women. The current context-of global economic restructuring and liberalization of markets, increasing militarisation of countries, regions and zones, growing fundamentalisms of various hues, re-emergence of population policies, adoption of developmental models that are playing havoc with the environment-calls for urgent action by civil society including feminist groups.

The 10th IWHM seeks to highlight resistance to such politics and related policies as issues of significance to women's health. The linkages and interconnections of these seemingly disparate phenomena and policies and their impact of women's health will be explored even as it will attempt to center-stage the issue of women's health as a fundamental right. The 10th IWHM provides a forum where the deliberations on these issues and the challenges that they pose for working towards operationalising health as a right. It will enable diverse range of participants to network, strategize and help in strengthening the women's health movement through sharing of experiences and skills.

Focal Themes include: Public Health, Health Sector Reforms and Gender; Reproductive and Sexual Health Rights; Politics and Resurgence of Population Control Policies; Women's Rights and Medical Technologies; Violence (of State, Militarism, Family and Development) and Women's Health. "Setting Sail For New Horizons - From The Past To The Future" 31st Annual Conference of the Australian and New Zealand College of Mental Health Nurses - Fremantle. The theme of this conference challenges us to reflect upon the current state of mental health nursing, the events that have shaped the profession to date and the need to have a vision about where they want to be in the future. What is on the horizon for mental health nursing? Various pressures in the form of funding cuts, an ageing workforce, acute shortages of specialist mental health professionals and the ongoing need to ensure that practices result in the best possible outcomes for consumers of mental health services combine to challenge our profession. The scope of practice of mental health nursing, the ways in which mental health nursing education is delivered and the nature of relationships with consumers, carers and other health professionals have all changed markedly over the years. It is inevitable that they will continue to change. For more information contact the Secretariat via email or visit the Conference website.
